St. Patrick’s Day at Sycamore

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Wow! We had a great time visiting with Jeremy Cowan, founder of Shmaltz Brewing. Sycamore had many Shmaltz beers on tap for the dinner, as well as a wide selection of Shmaltz bottles. If you get a chance, head to Sycamore to try the Oak-aged RIPA. The aging mellows it nicely. It was definitely my favorite beer of the evening.

The next Sycamore beer dinner is scheduled for April 14th and will feature De Molen, a brewery in the Netherlands.

Three Floyds Pride & Joy Mild Ale

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

I picked this up in Chicago at the beginning of August. I enjoy Three Floyds beers, but this is the first time I’ve had Pride & Joy. It is called a mild ale by Three Floyds, but all the beers I’ve had from Three Floyds have been anything but mild, so I was curious how this would taste.

The beer pours a light orange amber color. It has a sweet malty nose with a hint of citrus from the hops. The beer doesn’t pour with a lot of head, but it does leave some lacing on the glass. The beer has lots of malty flavor and a mild bitter hoppy finish. All in all a well balanced beer.

It is labeled a session beer, and I can certainly see that. The beer reminds me of Alpha King, without being quite so over-the-top. I’ll definitely picking more of this up next time I make it across the Mississippi River to Illinois.

Another Beer Fest in St. Louis

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

I just saw this come across Beer Advocate and thought I should mention it here. The Beer and Brats Festival will be held at Westport Plaza on June 28th from noon to 6PM. The cost is $20 in advance or $25 at the door. More details on the site.

It seems like beer related festivals in Missouri are popping up like crazy this summer, or maybe I just wasn’t looking hard enough before. The St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival, the St. Louis Micro Fest, the festival in Jeff City last weekend, and the Hermann Rhythm and Brews Festival on June 21st. So much good beer, so little time.

Beer Tasting at Sycamore

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

We had a great time at the beer tasting last night at Sycamore. Thanks for getting this tasting group together, Sanford!

Almost all of the beers were new to me which was a nice surprise. I also enjoyed getting to meet several local beer geeks that I hadn’t yet met. I knew that some home brewers had been invited but I had no idea what they would bring or how the home brew beer would be. The beer they brought was excellent!

For another write-up on the evening be sure to check out Jeff’s blog.

Here is the list of beers we sampled. I was taking this down rather quickly so if there are any mistakes let me know and I’ll correct them.
