St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

The Beer Evangelists will be making the trip from Columbia to St. Louis for the St. Louis Brewers Heritage Festival. We are attending the Friday afternoon session. Look for a post or two tomorrow afternoon live from Forest Park.

Boulevard Brewing Double-Wide IPA

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

This is the second beer in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. It pours with a thick head that leaves some lacing. It is almost the color of tea. The nose has hints of citrus and grain, but the nose isn’t terribly strong. For as thick as the head is, there isn’t much carbonation on the tongue. There is lots of hop bitterness that stays in the mouth well after a taking a drink. It has just a hint of sweetness at the finish. This is a very drinkable beer, but at $7.99 for a 750ml bottle (8.5% ABV) it is a bit pricy for me.

Oskar Blues Brewery’s Gordon Beer

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Oskar Blues describes their Gordon as a cross between an Imperial Red and a Double IPA. The deep amber color along with the off-white head and lacing back that claim up after being poured from a 12 oz can into a pint glass. The aroma is sweet and malty up front with some citrus in the background. I am surprised that the Gordon tastes as dry as it does considering how sweet the aroma is, but the website does claim that it is 85 IBU, making it a well balanced beer. The flavor starts off with resiny grapefruit but transitions to roasted grains with a bit of caramel. The finish is surprisingly, but still enjoyable, astringent.

This is a decently flavorful beer combined with a medium body to make a drinkable beer, but watch out because it is 8.7% abv and it can sneak up on you quickly.

Schlafly Dry Hopped APA

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Last night I decided to do a quick review of one of my favorite beers. This is the beer I credit as my ‘a-ha!’ beer. I’m sure many of you have already tried it.

In case you haven’t: this beer is a great beer to try if you aren’t sure what it is about different beers that you like. This is a hoppy beer. It isn’t the hoppiest beer available, but is hoppy enough for you to get the idea. So if you like this beer, you will probably be more likely to enjoy beers that have names like India Pale Ale (IPA) and American Pale Ale (APA).

The beer pours burnt orange with a thick head that takes several minutes to settle and it leaves lots of lacing as it does. It has a wonderful citrus nose, with a bit of graininess mixed in. The beer is bitter, but not excessively so. It is easy to drink; full but not heavy. The finish has a bit of sweetness, but not from the yeast. It is more of a grainy sweetness. The is a really great beer if you are used to the big brewery lagers but would like to sample something different. It is my ‘always in the fridge’ beer.
